In contrast with the immediate engagement that characterizes plein-aire artwork, creating in the studio is a more deliberative process. The task of the artist in the studio is to externalize her internal world rather than internalizing a particular external moment. Whether the subject matter is memories, pure imagination or a carefully considered arrangement of objects, creation in the studio is a chance to more deeply explore intimately held subjects.
